Controlling Humidity Year-Round in Your Ann Arbor Area Home

Controlling Humidity Year-Round in Your Ann Arbor Area Home

Maintaining the ideal humidity level inside your Ann Arbor or Dexter home may seem a daunting task, but it is important not only for your family’s health but to prevent potential damage to your home.  In Michigan, humidity levels can be high in the summer, while the winter months bring dry, frigid air.  Ideally, humidity levels between 30% and 50% are what you want to achieve inside your home.  With the proper equipment and a bit of planning, you can strike the ideal balance.

Excess moisture or humidity in the air can result in damaged walls, carpets, and furnishing.  Not only that, mold and mildew may develop, potentially dangerous to your family’s health.  Water stains, rotting wood, and swollen sheetrock are other concerns.  The growth of bacteria and increase in dust mites may also aggravate specific health issues such as asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions.

Here are a few steps you can take to achieve the ideal humidity level in your southeast Michigan home:

In summer months, consider a whole-house dehumidifier.  While most modern air conditioning systems do remove a portion of the humidity, a dehumidifier can help if yours cannot maintain levels below 50%.  Portable units are also effective, although better for a particular area or room in your home that seems excessively humid. Proper ventilation in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms also assists in removing moisture caused by showering, drying clothes, and cooking.

In winter months, taking the opposite approach has often been effective in preventing indoor air which is too dry.  A portable or whole-house humidifier will add moisture to the air, helping prevent respiratory infections, difficulty breathing, dry, cracked skin, and even static electricity, potentially harmful to electronic equipment, hardwood floors, and wood trim.  A whole-house humidifier can be added to your HVAC system, making it easy to keep humidity levels under control in the winter months.
