27 Aug Could Your Air Conditioner Problems Be Compressor Related?
August is typically an uncomfortably warm month for many states, including Michigan. At Haley Mechanical, we realize most southeast Michigan homeowners in Ypsilanti, Dexter, and surrounding areas rely on your air conditioner to keep you cool and comfortable around the clock. Summer time is when you should pay particular attention to your cooling system, as the hot temperatures can result in issues you do not expect to have to contend with. Some of the most dangerous (and in many cases, costly) issues with an air conditioner are those related to the compressor. Unfortunately, most people do not really know what the compressor is, what it does, and what the potential problems may be.
What is a compressor? Essentially, the compressor is a gas pump situated between the condenser coil and evaporator coil. The refrigerant evaporates in the evaporator coil, then moves to the compressor, which pumps the gas further through the system to the condenser coil. Compressors are not designed to pump liquid, and only handle refrigerant in its gas form.
Potential problems with the compressor. If you notice that your air conditioner is short-cycling (kicking on and off more often than normal), it could indicate a damaged compressor. The most common issue with compressors is that they may be exposed to the liquid refrigerant, usually because the level of the refrigerant is too low. When levels are low, the evaporator coil may not be able to evaporate all of the refrigerant, which results in liquid getting into the compressor. This results in a substantial amount of hydraulic pressure the compressor simply isn’t designed to handle, which may result in break down of the compressor.
Ultimately, if the compressor breaks down or becomes damage, it can cause your entire A/C system to break down.
