12 Jul S-t-r-e-t-c-h Your Energy Dollars by Replacing Your Furnace Filter
Homeowners in the southeast Michigan areas of Dexter, Ann Arbor, and Ypsilanti can enjoy many benefits by changing the filter in your furnace regularly, not the least of which is money savings. While this is an easy task, many homeowners neglect to change the furnace filter – or simply forget to. If you take care of it on a regular basis, you’ll reap the benefits; otherwise, your energy dollars are literally going up in smoke.
Here are a few of the most important benefits of maintaining your furnace filter:
- For just a little expense, you can save yourself a lot of expense. Unless you purchase a HEPA or other specialized type of filter, most are very inexpensive and simple to install. Taking care of this regularly can save you in energy use and the cost of repairs.
- While we refer to it as a furnace filter, it actually filters or cleans the air that flows through your equipment when you are using the A/C to cool your home in summer months, and when using the furnace to warm your Michigan home in winter months.
- The life of your HVAC equipment is extended. Just like everything else in your home, the components of your heating/cooling system to collect dirt, dust, and other debris. The air filter will clean these particles, which means the components move more freely and your system lasts longer.
Fail to replace the furnace filter, and you’ll spend more money on energy costs – not to mention wear out your equipment. A clogged furnace filter means your system has to strain and work harder to keep your home comfortable. The blower fan has to work hard to push air throughout your ductwork when the filter is clogged with debris, preventing the flow of air.
In general, during the months you are actually running your heating/cooling equipment on a regular basis you will need to change a standard one- or two-inch filter once per month. Thicker filters typically don’t have to be changed as often (those that are four inches thick or thicker), however there are some factors that may necessitate a change more often such as homes with indoor pets, homes with occupants who smoke, or those that are particularly dusty.
At Haley Mechanical, we want to help you achieve lower energy costs, a comfortable home, and heating/cooling equipment that enjoys a long lifespan. We invite southeast Michigan homeowners to contact us with any questions you may have regarding furnace filters or other HVAC related topics.
