06 Nov The Secrets to Cheap Heat During Michigan Winters
Winter is upon us, and heaters will soon be humming in Dexter and Ann Arbor homes. The bad news is that heating costs are forecast to rise this winter, particularly for those who use heating oil to warm their homes. In fact, it is predicted that homeowners who use this source for heating will pay 19% more when compared to last winter! This means that Michigan homeowners on average will pay approximately $400 more during this winter season to heat their homes.
How can you keep your home comfortable without spending a fortune on heating costs?
Consider a high efficiency furnace. In the 1970s, most furnaces had an AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) of 65% efficiency – so if your heater is that old, you’re “burning up” money! Today’s models often have a rating as high as 98.2%. Essentially, this means that only 1.8% of your heat is getting sent out of the flue as exhaust. You save as much as 25 to 30% on heating costs.
Keep in mind all furnaces are not created equal. Most high efficiency furnaces you buy today will offer an AFUE rating of at least 80%, but this still means that 20% of your heat is being lost as exhaust. When you live in an area such as Michigan where winters can be particularly harsh, the savings you experience with a high efficiency furnace offering an AFUE rating of 95% or higher outweigh the slightly higher cost of a more efficient unit.
You can keep your home warm and comfortable this winter AND keep heating costs down by having a high efficiency furnace installed.
