SE Michigan Homeowners: Protecting Your A/C Now Will Mean Efficient Operation Next Spring

How well your air conditioner performs next spring and summer is directly related to the care you give it this fall.  While there isn’t as much to worry about with the evaporator and system air handler because they will be protected in the warm indoors this winter, the  outdoor half of your A/C is another matter.  Considering the cold, harsh winter elements we often experience in Michigan, it can really do a number on your compressor and condenser.  By taking preventive measures now, you can relax knowing that you can rely on your air conditioner when temperatures warm up again.

Here are two steps you should consider for protecting your A/C, either is a good option:

Cut a piece of plywood to size and place it on top of the outdoor unit.  It’s a good idea to weight the plywood down with bricks to keep it in place.  In doing this, you will be protecting the condenser/compressor from falling objects such as icicles, particularly important if your unit is installed close to your home.  Prevent excess weight on your unit by sweeping or brushing it to remove excess snow and ice.

Consider purchasing an air conditioner cover sized appropriately for your unit.  Many homeowners in Ypsilanti, Dexter, Ann Arbor, and surrounding areas wrap the entire unit, thinking they are protecting the unit from the harsh elements.  This can actually result in further damage, as wrapping in an airtight manner can result in accumulating moisture on the inside of the unit, meaning rust, corrosion, and deterioration.  Rats, squirrels, and other rodents may also take shelter inside, something you definitely want to avoid.  Covers you can buy commercially are designed specifically for this use, and protect your unit from snow, ice, windblown rain, and little critters looking for a nesting place.
