Ductless mini-split systems installed in your Ann Arbor and Dexter, Michigan area home

Mitsubishi Ductless Mini-Split Systems

Traditional air conditioning systems are considered central split systems, while a ductless “mini-split” system works more efficiently by separating the air handler and condenser. Like a traditional system, the condenser is placed outdoors while the air handler is mounted inside your SE Michigan home. When forced air central systems are not workable or cost-effective, ductless mini-split systems are often a great alternative and are mounted to the wall, providing a “hi-tech” look.

How Does a Furnace & AC Mini Split System Work?
There are three primary components to a ductless mini-split system including a) the outdoor condensing unit, b) the indoor air handler/evaporator, and c) a 3 to 4-inch diameter conduit which houses refrigerant tubing, a cable for power, and the condensate drain. Installed outside your home, the condenser and conduit run from the outdoor unit to wall-mounted individual interior units installed in the individual rooms of your home. This allows you to control the temperature in various rooms or areas of your home so that you enjoy cool or heated air depending on the season.
What's the Difference Between Central Air Conditioning and a Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump?
With a central air conditioning system, the thermostat is typically located in one area, which means the temperature in that area controls the entire house. Some rooms may become too warm or cold, with no way to regulate temperatures throughout your home or business. With a mini-split system, you can control how much cold air enters specific rooms in your home because interior units are installed in the rooms where you need it, and controlled by separate handheld thermostats for each zone.
Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioning is Highly Efficient
The ductwork in a central system delivers conditioned air to various rooms or “zones” in your home. However, there is much energy loss – in fact, as much as 40%. With a ductless mini-split system the energy loss in only about one to five percent, which means you can save about half on cooling and heating costs by making the switch to a ductless system. Here’s an example to help you understand the concept: With a 2-ton central system, it is necessary to have two 220v amp disconnects, each with 30 amps. With a ductless system, only a single 220v 30 amp disconnect is needed. While a ductless system uses a total of 10 to 11 amps while operating, a central system draws 20 to 30 amps outside and 20 amps indoors while running. A considerable difference! Ductless systems consume on average 2,000 to 2,500 total watts, while each component of a central system will consume approximately 2,000 watt or 4,000 in total. The majority of ductless systems are capable of achieving a SEER rating of 30.5 and are ENERGY STAR qualified, while a traditional central system typically has a SEER rating of 18 at the most. This means increased comfort and a significant reduction in utility costs.
Zoned Comfort
If you have been used to a central heating and cooling system, no doubt you have experienced hot or cold pockets or areas in your home. With a ductless mini-split system multiple indoor units are connected to one outdoor condenser, and conditioned air is delivered exactly where you need it. When one member of the family prefers a warmer room and another like it cooler, no problem – and you still enjoy a reduction in wasted energy, which results in lower heating and cooling costs.
Inverter Technology & Its Advantages
Inverter technology is used in many ductless mini-split systems, which is a key energy efficiency factor. With a conventional ducted system the speed at which the system operates is “fixed,” which is why regardless of whether all the areas of your home are comfortable, it shuts off and comes on at regular intervals which are controlled by the temperature in the immediate area surrounding your thermostat. With a mini-split system inverter technology means no sudden start or stop cycles as a variable frequency is used which means a gradual and steady revolution of increased or decreased power. You enjoy even temperatures that are maintained for a longer period and achieved faster than with a conventional system.
Quiet Operation
The component of an air conditioning system responsible for the most noise is the condenser, which can be located as far as 100 feet away from the indoor unit. When compared to the rumbling noises typical with forced-air systems and noisy window air conditioners, you will enjoy operation that’s much quieter and even barely noticeable when operated on a low setting. Quiet comfort!
Advantages of Ductless Mini-Split Systems
No blocked views of the outdoors or security risks as you may face with a cumbersome window air conditioning unit. Ductless mini-split systems are typically mounted out of view, high on the wall. They are stylish and compact, which means they will not interfere with your decor. In most cases, three indoor units can cool your entire home when positioned properly by an expert HVAC technician. When compared to ductwork, three to four-inch conduit is quicker and easier to install and allows increased flexibility while reducing costs. In most cases, it takes just a few hours to set up a mini-split system. Customizable options are possible including sleep modes and other convenient features because of the fact each indoor unit controls the comfort of a single room. Ductless mini-split systems improve indoor air quality and are capable of removing more humidity from the air, creating a healthier environment for those who experience allergies, asthma, and other respiratory issues. Some ductless mini-split models can cut as much as 99.9% of viruses and bacteria, something conventional systems do not even come close to accomplishing. For home or business owners concerned about the environment, these systems have a smaller carbon footprint because of the zoning capabilities and operational efficiency. Instead of ozone-depleting R22 refrigerant, newer systems operate using R410-A which is environmentally friendly.
